2001 Population and Housing Census

2001 Population and Housing Census

PREFACE

The Population, Housing and Dwelling census was conducted in Slovakia in May 2001 pursuant to the Population, Housing and Dwelling Census Act No 165/1998 Coll. It constituted a part of a global census, taken around 2000 in many other world countries. The census in Slovakia was conducted for the first time after Slovakia had become a separate republic.

In addition to the national statistics authorities, other central and local state authorities became actively involved in the preparation and implementation of the Population, Housing and Dwelling Census. An important role in the Population, Housing and Dwelling Census was played by towns and municipalities.

In the Population, Housing and Dwelling Census, selected demographic, social and cultural characteristics of the population, selected data on housing and dwelling stocks and household equipment in selected durable goods were surveyed by means of self-enumeration. The content of the survey was processed in accordance with international recommendations, making the census results internationally comparable.

The importance of the census lies especially in the fact that it collected information that could not be obtained in another way. The processed data enable comparing the development of the society over the last ten years and they allow to internationally compare the surveyed characteristics with other countries. The data collected serve also as the basis for projecting the demographic development of the society and represented a starting point for statistical surveys in households for the period to come.

The publication covering the 2001 Population, Housing and Dwelling Census results contains the most important data for the Slovak republic and its regions according to the situation on 26th May 2001. It characterises the population development, its age, religion, nationality, educational and social structure, economic activity of population, commuting to work, household structure, as well as housing and dwelling stocks. In addition, it contains a comparison with the results of previous censuses. Data covering the year 1991 have been converted in the territorial structure of 2001 according to the methodology valid in this census.

The publication is divided into the analysis of census results, into which analytical table overviews are incorporated, and into a more comprehensive set of table overviews with more detailed data on Slovak regions including charts and maps. The publication also includes a general description of the methodology used in the census.

More detailed characteristics is available from figure publications processed and published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, or from the SOSR census database.
