The situation on labour market was unfavourably affected by lower demand for labour force in the 1st quarter. The number of the employed decreased by 4,4 % to 2 283,1 thous. of persons compared with the 1st quarter of 2009. The total decrease was affected by a decrease in the number of employees by 5,8 % to 1 906,9 thous. persons. The number of self-employed persons increased by 2,9 % to 371,5 thous., of which self-employed without employees by 4,7 % to 291,7 thous. The number of self-employed with employees decreased by 3,4 % to 79,8 thous. of persons.
The seasonally adjusted employment decreased by 0,5 % in the 1st quarter of 2010, compared with the 4th quarter of 2009.
The total employment was affected most by a fall in the number of the employed in industry (by 79,1 thous.), and in transportation and storage (by 21,8 thous.). The number of the employed persons increased mostly in trade, in public administration, in compulsory social security, in information and communication. 59,6 % of the total number of the employed persons was employed in services, 25,8 % in industry, 11,1 % in construction, 3,4 % in agriculture, forestry and fishing.
5,4 % of the total number of the employed persons worked abroad (122,2 thous.) in the 1st quarter. Compared with 1st quarter of 2009, their number decreased by 5,1 %. Slovaks worked mostly in the Czech Republic (42 %) and in Austria (18,6 %). Their number decreased most in the Czech Republic (by 3,8 thous.) and increased in Austria (by 6,2 thous.), year-on-year. They were employed mostly in construction (34,1 %) and in industrial sectors (23,6 %). The highest number of the employed abroad was from the region Prešov (24,4 %) and Nitra (21 %). The highest decrease of the employed persons abroad was in the region Bratislava (by 31 %)
The employment rate in the age group 20-64 1) decreased by 3,3 p.p. to 64 % compared with the 1st quarter of 2009.
The creation of job vacancies 2) was affected by negative changes. Compared with the 1st quarter of 2009, their number decreased by 7 849 (by 37,3 %) to 13 209 job vacancies. It decreased absolutely most in public administration, social security (by 4 640 posts). The more considerable decrease was also in transportation and storage; construction; industry and in accommodation and food service activities. The most significant year-on-year increase of the number of posts (307) was in human health and social work activities. The offer also increased in real estate activities; in water supply; in information and communication; in arts, entertainment and recreation.
In territorial terms, the most job vacancies was in the region Bratislava (6 691). In other regions, their number oscillated between 823 (Trnava) and 1 025 (Žilina). This number was lower in all regions, year-on-year. It decreased most in the region Trnava (by 61,4 %) and the least in the region Bratislava (by 32,1 %).
The rate of job vacancies reached 0,7 %. It was higher than averagely in the whole economy mostly in public administration, social security (2,6 %), in financial and insurance activities (1,6 %), in electricity, gas and steam (1,5 %).

The number of the unemployed amounted averagely to 407,1 thous. of persons in the 1st quarter. Compared with the corresponding period last year, it increased by 44,9 % (by 126,1 thous.). The unemployment rate increased by 4,6 p.p. to 15,1 %.
In comparison between quarters (1st quarter of 2010 compared with 4th quarter of 2009), the seasonally adjusted unemployment increased by 4,6 %.
With the exception of persons with last employment in education, their number was higher than in the 1st quarter of 2009 in the rest sectors. The unemployment was affected mostly by an increase in the number of persons with last employment in industry, construction, accommodation and food service activities and in trade.
The number of the unemployed in the long-term (longer than one year) increased, year-on-year by 61,1 thous. to 217,7 thous. of persons. Their number decreased by 2,2 p.p. to 53,5 %. The highest increase in the unemployed in the short-term was in the category 6 months - 1 year by 45,2 thous. (by 138,7 %). The unemployment decreased only in the category unemployed fewer than 1 month (by 11,4 thous. to 31,6 thous.).
Considerable part of all the unemployed (83,3 %) was represented by persons with apprentice, primary and full secondary education.
